Conceptual Loft

The inspiration behind the loft design came from a series of paintings by Hilma af Klint. The organic nature of the painting had a strong influence as well as the floating nature of the part of the painting. It is almost as if each element is floating around on the purple background. This led to an exploration of floating and air that is demonstrated in the loft.

First Level Plan

Second Level Plan

In the floorplans, I wanted to explore the idea of using organic shapes like the sphere used throughout my design. I wanted to see how using curves could inform the movement of the space and make people move certain ways. In the center of the space, curves are used again in a way to bring people together and create a gathering space in the kitchen and living room.

East Elevation

In the elevations, I am able to express how I consider the idea of compression and expansion. When someone enters the space they are under the bedroom and then expand into the rest of the space. The bedroom also has a sense of floating as it is above and has a balcony outside. The kitchen and living space has the glass tubes above it. This was an exploration of creating a feeling of floating with light and shadows.
